Sacramento police arrest stolen-vehicle suspect after pursuit ends in river

Published: Friday, Jan. 31, 2014 - 9:36 pm

A man who was spotted driving a stolen vehicle this afternoon was taken into custody after going for a swim in the Sacramento River.

Sacramento police officers attempted to stop the vehicle in the area of West El Camino Avenue and Interstate 5 about 3:39 p.m. The driver, later identified as Esteban Araujo, 24, led officers on a pursuit that ended in the area of Vernon Road and Garden Highway, according to a Police Department news release. Araujo then ran from the vehicle and into the river, where he tried to swim away from officers.

Also taken into custody was Angelica Lopez, 27, who was a passenger in the vehicle during the pursuit.

No injuries were reported.

Police said officers found property inside the vehicle that reportedly had been stolen in a recent theft in a neighboring jurisdiction. A police spokesman said Araujo and Lopez were booked on suspicion of offenses related to possession of stolen property. Araujo also was booked on suspicion of vehicle theft, evading and being an ex-felon in possession of ammunition.
