Experienced teachers add value

Re "A new front in state’s school war” (Dan Walters, Jan. 29): Our students need the best education we can provide, not just to increase economic opportunity but even more importantly to learn the principles and workings of our democratic institutions. It takes years for even the most committed teachers to develop the necessary skills to reach the students in most need. But a lawsuit filed by Schools Matter seeks to make it easier to fire experienced teachers. Teachers would be subject to dismissal without due process or appeal. The lawsuit is part of an effort by wealthy individuals to demolish teacher unions, to convert public education into a source of private profit, and to replace teaching professionals with temporary workers who can read from scripts. The lawsuit’s backers include Michelle Rhee, who seeks to base teachers’ evaluations on standardized test scores.
