Re "Private ambulances no panacea" (Letters, Feb. 4) Letter writer Pramod Kulkarni is wrong to place his trust in the fire department. My son, who was 17 years old at the time, awoke in the middle of the night in acute abdominal pain and looked like he was at death's door.
I called 911. The fire department responded, and proclaimed his vitals were normal. I wanted him taken by ambulance. The fire chief told my husband I was an overprotective mom.
My son's appendix was bursting, and he was hospitalized for 6 days.
It makes no sense to pay exorbitant overtime costs and to use firemen as primary medical transport. If you don't want a trip, don't call.
I would have more than happy to have coaxed into an ambulance ride.
