Following a strong showing in December, California saw a plunge in job vacancies advertised online in January, according to the latest statistics from the Conference Board.
Statewide, there were 561,900 ads in January, down from a revised 580,200 ads in December, a decline of more than 3 percent. Last months total also was down from 581,300 ads in January 2013.
Californias month-to-month decline of 18,300 ads easily led the nation and represented almost a third of the nationwide decrease. Nationally, the board said, ads declined 56,800 from December to January, to 5,232,000
While the end of the holiday season typically is accompanied by fewer companies seeking seasonal help, Conference Board Vice President June Shelp also noted that employers still seem hesitant to expand their work force.
The board said 26,800 ads were posted in Sacramento last month, down slightly from 27,600 in December and a 7.2 percent decline from 28,900 in January 2013.
