Sacramento County public health officials today updated the number of flu fatalities in the county to 24 residents, three more than were reported on Monday. Thirteen of the victims were women and 11 were men.

A total of 98 patients have been hospitalized in intensive care units throughout the county during the 2013-2014 flu season.

The predominant strain is still the H1N1 influenza A virus, one which Dr. Sam Louie of UC Davis Medical Center said has “surprised everybody” with its virulence.

“This is just one more reminder that Mother Nature can surprise us,” Louie said.

Today, a free flu vaccination clinic is being held in West Sacramento at West Sacramento City Hall, 1110 W. Capitol Ave, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. Yolo County Public Health Department officials will be giving vaccinations.

On Tuesday, a Kaiser Permanente free flu clinic near Cal Expo drew about 1,400 people, the large majority of whom were not Kaiser members.
