Get health screening, cooking tips at Midtown Farmers Market

Fresh fruit and vegetables are good for your health; a Saturday trip to a farmers market can be good for your heart, too.

On Feb. 15, the Midtown Farmers Market at J and 20th streets will “Go Red” for women’s heart health. The Sacramento chapter of the American Heart Association and representatives from Sutter Heart and Vascular Institute will offer free health screenings to market patrons. In addition, local chef Noah Zonca will demonstrate heart-healthy cooking using produce from the market.

The event is in honor of February as American Heart Month and Go Red For Women, a program to raise heart disease awareness. According to the AHA, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States.

The screenings will be offered from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 15 at 2020 J St., Sacramento. From 10 to 11 a.m., Zonca — owner/chef of Capital Dime — will cook up some healthy ways to use local winter produce.

Hosted by the Midtown Business Association, the Midtown Farmers Market is open year round on Saturday mornings and offers a wide variety of locally grown fruit and vegetables in addition to prepared foods, arts and crafts.
