Re California Attorney General Kamala Harris gave a a no-spin, factual description of San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed's ballot proposal to strip teachers, firefighters, police officers, and other public servants of their retirement security.
Reed's measure does, in fact, eliminate the vested retirement benefits we have earned. Reed should not be surprised that the Attorney General used that word to describe the constitutional change embedded in the measure. Reed and his allies have done the same themselves.
If Reed really wants to take the politics out of the pension issue, he should do what most mayors are doing: solve these challenges at the bargaining table, not the ballot box.
