Woman identified in fatal I-80 crash

Published: Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 - 2:50 pm

A 40-year-old woman has been identified as the only fatality in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near Soda Springs last night, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.

Fang Ling was a passenger in a green Lexus with an unidentified male driver who lost control of the vehicle during inclement weather and drove into an embankment. The vehicle came to rest on the median shoulder perpendicular to the roadway. The driver and Ling exited the vehicle and an uninvolved citizen stopped to help them pull the car out of the snow-covered median.

Nine minutes later, George Georgiou, 73, lost control of a black Lexus and drove it off the roadway, striking Ling and the green Lexus. Ling was pronounced dead on the scene. Neither Georgiou nor Ling’s driver were injured.

CHP closed eastbound lanes for more than two hours, between 4:52 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The cause of the accident is under investigation, but drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as contributing factors.
