Mulch around plants helps retain moisture and eradicate weeds.

Mulch adds up to big savings

Published: Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014 - 12:00 am

This is one part of a new weekly feature in Home & Garden, highlighting ways residents can save water.

•  Mulch, mulch, mulch.

Two to three inches of insulating, moisture-saving mulch spread around shrubs, trees and perennials can save 30 gallons per 1,000 square feet each time you water. It cuts down on evaporation while keeping plant roots comfortable. If you irrigate twice a week, that adds up to 3,120 gallons annual savings per 1,000 square feet of landscaping.
