Sweetness at center

What: The Sacramento Valley Section of the National Council of Negro Women Inc. is hosting the 25th annual Sweet Potato Festival at the Samuel Pannell Meadowview Community Center. There will be a sweet potato pie contest, games, food vendors, a DJ and live music.

Where: 2450 Meadowview Road, Sacramento.

When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost: Admission is free; food is available for purchase.

Dessert is served

What: At the Davis Musical Theatre Company’s dessert auction, attendees can bid on a dessert, eat it and listen to performances throughout the evening at the group’s performing-arts center.

Treats all day

What: Organized by teen volunteers, the I Heart Sacramento Zoo Day will feature valentine-themed animal enrichments and informative talks. Here is when animals will receive their treats: 9:30 a.m., Sumatran orangutan; 10 a.m., chimpanzee; 10:30 a.m., snow leopard; 11 a.m., black-and-white ruffed lemur; 11:30 a.m., giraffe; noon, interpretive center; 1 p.m., giant anteater; 1:30 p.m., African lion; 2 p.m., North American river otter; 2:30 p.m., reptile house; 3 p.m., red river hog; 3:30 p.m., ground hornbill and great hornbill.

Where: Land Park and Sutterville Road, Sacramento.

When: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost: Admission is $11.25 for adults and $7.25 for youths. There is no charge for children up to age 1.

SPCA fundraiser

What: The Sweetheart Jamboree is a fundraiser for the Sacramento SPCA at the Hideaway Bar and Grill. Guests are asked to bring donations of new or gently used blankets, toys and/or dog and cat food. Raffle tickets will be given for all donations.

Where: 2625 Franklin Blvd., Sacramento.

When: Noon to 4 p.m.

Cost: Free; donations welcome.

Film and discussion

What: “Al Helm (The Dream): Martin Luther King in Palestine,” a film by Connie Field, will be shown at the Guild Theater in Sacramento. The film follows an American gospel choir and playwright as they join Palestinian actors and a director in an evolving story about King’s life through which they learn about each other’s struggle for freedom. Field will answer questions and lead a discussion after the screening.

Where: 2828 35th St., Sacramento.

When: 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. (Doors open at 2 p.m.)
