Long-awaited soaking quenches parched Folsom Lake

Sacramento is drying out and Folsom Lake is rising as the first soaking rain since Dec. 2012 exits Northern California.

Nearly three inches of rain has fallen in Sacramento this month. Not exactly drought-busting, but welcome relief as the area absorbed the storm like a giant sponge.

“Folsom Lake has risen 15 feet since the morning of Feb. 6, which is nice,” said National Weather Service forecaster Brooke Bingaman. “They minimized the outflows to allow all the water to collect and help Folsom Lake out.”

A drier weather pattern is shaping up for this week. A series of low pressure systems is forecast to target the west coast, but forecasters believe the storms will track more northward this time.

“There is a slight-chance-to-a-chance of rain between Wednesday and into the weekend,” said Bingaman.

Sacramento stands at about 40 percent of normal for the rainfall year. Before the storm, the city only had 16 percent of normal.

“The storm definitely helped, but we are still below normal,” said Bingaman. “We need several of these storms.”

The weekend storm was the first significant precipitation since December 2012, said Bingaman.
