Sacramento police release more info about Land Park search, suspect

Sacramento police released more information today on Monday’s search for a suspect that ended with a tackle by police.

At the end of the Land Park search, officers arrested Michael Kennedy, 19, on suspicion of resisting arrest, battery on a peace officer and burglary, according to Sacramento police Officer Michele Gigante. Kennedy also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest on a charge of car theft.

Three officers were injured during the course of the hour-long incident, which began about 4:30 p.m. None were seriously injured.

Two Regional Transit officers came across Kennedy after boarding an inbound lightrail train at the 4th Avenue Station. One of the officers saw a group of subjects who were pushing people while trying to exit the train upon seeing the officers board, Gigante said.

The officer confronted the subjects, one of whom attempted to punch the officer in the face “out of nowhere,” Gigante said. The officer, who was not hit, tried to grab the suspect, later identified as Kennedy, and the two fell down the stairs and onto the platform. Kennedy then ran , Gigante said.

The officers chased Kennedy onto Freeport Boulevard and into a residential neighborhood near Bidwell Way. A perimeter was set up and police K9s and a helicopter assisted in the search. One officer was injured during the course of that search, Gigante said.

Later, an officer stationed at the perimeter saw the suspect riding a bicycle out of the front yard of a home, and tackled him. With the assistance of a bystander and other officers, the officer took Kennedy into custody, Gigante said.

Police later determined that Kennedy had broken into a detached garage on Bidwell and stolen the bicycle, Gigante said.
