Wet weather forecast for Sacramento’s weekend

Storms are lining up in the Pacific Ocean, although it is not yet clear exactly how much rain the Sacramento region can expect from the weather systems.

The first rain maker moving inland with increasing clouds over Northern California may bring a few sprinkles on Thursday to Sacramento. The moisture plume originating near Hawaii is mostly aimed toward far northern California and the Pacific Northwest.

Red Bluff and Redding could see a half inch of rain from this initial storm.

Then, on the weekend, a cold front is forecast to dig to the south bringing more moisture and cooler temperatures to Northern California, according to the National Weather Service. Early estimates call for a quarter of an inch of rain in the Sacramento region.

Snow levels will start off high Saturday morning, lowering to about 6,000-feet elevation at nightfall. On President’s Day, a break in the weather is forecast with mostly sunny skies predicted for Sacramento.

The third wave of weather is expected to arrive Tuesday when a Pacific storm system is forecast to mix with another tropical moisture plume, according to the NWS. That could produce a weather event that is wetter than the weekend storm.

The detailed, 7-day forecast from the NWS for the Sacramento region:

Wednesday: Areas of dense fog before 10am. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 65. South southwest wind 3 to 7 mph.

Wednesday night: A 20 percent chance of rain after 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51. South wind 3 to 5 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
