Re "CVS has eye on bigger prize while it cuts off tobacco sales" (Viewpoints, Feb. 12): The American Cancer Society applauds CVS Caremark for its decision to cease the sale of tobacco products in its stores; we consider it a very important development in the effort to reduce tobacco use.

Tobacco remains the leading preventable cause of death in California, claiming more than 36,000 lives every year and costing Californians more than $18 billion per year in medical costs and lost productivity. Fighting cancer is good business and the CVS decision helps demonstrates how business can and must be part of the solution. We encourage all business leaders to take action and work with the American Cancer Society to: limit access to tobacco products in the workplace; create smoke-free workplaces and help employees stop smoking; and join CEOs Against Cancer to make a positive impact on your business and community. -- Cheryl Brunk, American Cancer Society, Sacramento
