Fire that started near water heater blamed for damage to Galt home

Published: Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014 - 3:17 pm

A fire that apparently originated near a water heater caused an estimated $100,000 damage to a Galt home Monday night.

The Cosumnes Fire Department responded at 11:22 p.m. to a report of a fire in a house in the 400 block of Sunset Drive. An occupant was awakened by the sound of the fire, and awoke his father, the only other person in the home at the time, according to a Fire Department news release. Both were able to safely evacuate the house.

The fire originated inside the garage and eventually burned through the roof to the attic of the house, fire officials said. Although the cause is still under investigation, investigators have confirmed that the fire originated within the garage area, near the water heater.

Fire officials remind residents to made sure appliances are installed in accordance with building codes and to store flammable liquids in approved containers away from ignition sources like water heaters. Combustible items also should not be stored near water heaters.

Fire officials also stressed the importance of making sure working smoke detectors are placed in each sleeping space, as well as in the hallway leading to sleeping areas and on each level of the home. They report that working smoke alarms increase the chance of surviving a house fire by 50 percent.
