RB Farm Water

Farmer Tom Muller uses drip irrigation lines in this field of garlic at his farm in Woodland on Thursday, February 13, 2014. Muller has put in drip irrigation on most of his tomato, sunflower and pepper fields, including one field that was converted with a grant from the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Nearly half of all the crops in California are still irrigated by some form of flood irrigation, a relatively wasteful practice that represents one place where water conservation could yield big benefits for the state. Efforts to bring that number down have been successful, but experts say there is room for improvement.
