Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and musician Yo-Yo Ma will be among those addressing local audiences in the 2014-15 Sacramento Speakers Series at the Community Center Theater, 1301 L St.
Berkeley restaurateur Alice Waters will open the series Sept. 23. The owner of Chez Panisse restaurant, Waters is regarded as a culinary pioneer who advocates cooking based on locally produced and sustainable ingredients.
Gates, the former secretary of defense and adviser to eight U.S. presidents, will appear Oct. 28. The recent publication of his book “Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War” has stirred debate on the role of government and need for a cohesive national strategy.
Cellist Yo-Yo Ma, whose multifaceted career includes exploring cultures and musical forms outside the Western classical tradition, is scheduled Dec. 9.
Television journalist, author and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper will usher in 2015, speaking Jan. 20.
Longtime long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad, who fulfilled her lifelong dream of swimming from Cuba to Florida last year at age 64, will speak March 3.
Rounding out the 2014-15 season April 7 will be David Brooks, a New York Times columnist and regular analyst on PBS’ “NewsHour” and NPR’s “All Things Considered.”
