Union announces strike against University of California

Published: Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 - 1:17 pm

The union representing several thousand University of California employees on Tuesday announced it will strike from March 3 to March 7.

AFSCME 3299, which represents roughly 8,300 custodians, groundskeepers, maintenance, dietary and food service staff at five university hospitals and other UC medical facilities, said 96 percent of member ballots favored the walkout. Assuming there’s no bargaining breakthrough, the five-day walkout will be the third time the union has staged a strike within the last year over pay, pensions and working conditions.

After talks between the union and the UC broke down last year, the university system imposed terms.

Another AFSCME unit representing 13,000 patient care workers will also strike in support, the union said in a press release.
