Re "Pre-kindergarten for all 4-year-olds makes sense" (Editorials, Feb. 16): I am excited that universal preschool could become a reality.
While SB 837 is a step in the right direction, the children who need early learning the most may be victims of the waiting list. My nephew was on a waiting list for preschool for more than six months before he was finally accepted. Without this opportunity he would be 10 steps behind his peers.
At-risk children who don't receive a high-quality early childhood education are 25 percent more likely to drop out of school and 70 percent more likely to be arrested for a violent crime. All children deserve the opportunity for quality preschool despite their family's income or ZIP code.
