Former Israeli general to speak on peace process

Danny Yatom, a retired major general of the Israel Defense Forces, will speak Thursday at Congregation B’nai Israel, 3600 Riverside Blvd., on the Middle East peace process now being led by Secretary of State John Kerry. Admission is free.

Behind the news: The 7 p.m. speech, “The Prospects for Peace: An Expert’s Perspective,” is sponsored by J Street Sacramento, which bills itself as “the political home for pro-Israel, pro-peace Americans.” Yatom has served in Israel’s Knesset and once headed the country’s Mossad security service.


Get a winter blast of French Film Festival

Why wait until summer to get a taste of Sacramento’s French Film Festival? Organizers are staging their seventh annual winter screening of short films at 7 p.m. Friday at the Crest Theatre, at 10th and K streets downtown. Admission is $10. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Behind the news: Since its inception in 2002, the French Film Festival has grown to become a landmark Sacramento cinematic event. French films are shown at the Crest over two consecutive weekends in June. Other events, such as this week’s showing of short films, occur throughout the year.
