Two shot outside Cal Expo 'Naughty Gras'

Two people were shot near a parking lot during the “Naughty Gras” event at Cal Expo Saturday night.

Both victims, who were not identified Sunday, had non-life threatening injuries. One was shot in the leg, while the other was shot in the hand and side, according to a Cal Expo press release. The two were taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

Police were searching for the shooter, who fled the scene heading west toward the Capital Freeway.

The incident happened at 9:59 p.m. near the entrance of Parking Lot A/B off of Exposition Boulevard, when a man fired four shots from a 9mm pistol, hitting two people and two unoccupied cars, according to Cal Expo officials. It was not known Sunday what prompted the shooting.

Cal Expo police, Sacramento police and Sacramento County Sheriff coordinated to secure the scene and the parking lot by 10:13 p.m. Despite an aerial and ground search of the surrounding area, the suspect was not found.

The two victims were attendees of the 5th Annual Naughty Gras, which was presented by 102.5 FM at Cal Expo Saturday night., according to Cal Expo officials. The event was described as catering to the over-21 crowd, and celebrated the flavor of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras. It featured food from the Big Easy, and music from the St. Gabriel’s Celestrial Brass band, as well as entertainment from fire performers, stilt walkers, aerialists and hoop performers.

According to event organizers, the majority of attendees at the indoor Naughty Gras event were not aware of the shooting incident, and the event closed at its scheduled time of 1:30 a.m. Roughly 2,400 tickets were sold for the event.
