Published: Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014 - 6:38 am

An inmate at the Sacramento County Jail died early Tuesday morning after becoming ill in his cell, according to sheriff’s department officials.

The prisoner, who was not named, is 24 years old and had been incarcerated since Saturday on drug-related charges and vehicle code violations.

Late last night, jail deputies were told that the inmate was vomiting and having other medical problems in his cell. He was immediately sent to a hospital where he was pronounced dead soon after at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, according to a sheriff’s department press release.

The cause of death is not yet known, however nothing suspicious appears to have occurred. An investigation will be conducted in accordance with departmental procedures and state law.
