Published: Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014 - 9:18 pm

A man who was reportedly walking on Highway 49 north of Auburn died Tuesday night when he was struck by a truck.

California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer David Martinez said the incident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. on southbound Highway 49 near Shale Ridge Lane. He said the pedestrian, an older man said to be a transient, was walking in the roadway when he was struck by a pickup, then may have been hit by a couple of other vehicles.

As of 9 p.m., southbound Highway 49 remained closed and southbound traffic was being routed around the accident scene via the northbound lanes. Martinez said the closure was expected to last until about 10 p.m.
