Showers arrive in Sacramento before Wednesday night’s main weather event

Scattered showers are gradually spreading across Northern California before the heaviest rainfall arrives later Wednesday in Sacramento.

The National Weather Service expects that the main weather event for the region, which is forecast to include rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds and mountain snow, will occur Wednesday night.

Perhaps three-quarters of an inch of rain could fall in the first of two wet storms. Showers are predicted to linger Thursday before tapering off in the evening.

On Friday, the second weather system arrives. By the time the two systems end on Saturday, the rainfall total could be one-to-two inches. Snowfall totals from the two systems may exceed two feet along the Sierra Nevada crest.

The detailed, 7-day forecast from the NWS for the Sacramento region:

Today: Rain, mainly after 10am. High near 65. Light southeast wind becoming south southeast 8 to 13 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Tonight: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 52. South southeast wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 10am, then showers likely. High near 63. South wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday night: Rain, mainly after 4 p.m. Low around 49. East wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Friday: Rain. High near 58. North northeast wind 6 to 9 mph becoming southeast in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Friday night: Showers. Low around 48. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Saturday: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 64.

Saturday night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 46.

Sunday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 63.

Sunday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45.

Monday: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 63.

Monday night: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 46.

Tuesday: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 67.
