SALIDA, Calif. -- Sheriff's officials in Central California say a father and son were shot while struggling with suspects during a home invasion robbery.
Deputies responded to the home in the Stanislaus County city of Salida around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. They say the father was with his 8 and 15-year-old sons and wife when four to five suspects came to their front door and forced their way inside.
They held the family at gunpoint and demanded cash and jewelry.
At some point, the father and 15-year-old son began fighting with the suspects. Gunshots went off during the struggle, and the two were shot and wounded. Their wounds were considered non-life threatening.
Deputies called their actions "heroic," saying the mother and 8-year-old were able to escape to a neighbor's house during the fight.
The suspects fled in a vehicle after the shots went off.
