Re "Not all homeless are victims" (Letters, March 2): Studies indicate that most of the homeless are persons who can't socially adapt or are mentally ill. Few choose to live at the margins simply to exploit public or private enablers of bad behavior. And any lack of initiative is not unique to them.

People disgusted by indigents standing in the median strips using a cardboard sign to barter compassion should recognize that these folks differ on moral principle from Internet peddlers of health cures mainly by hygiene and advertising budgets. Compassion, help and even tough love may be part of the mix. But critically missing from letter writer Robert Parrish's critique is our acceptance. -- Spencer P. Le Gate, Sacramento
