Rio Linda carjacking leaves victim, suspect injured

Published: Monday, Mar. 3, 2014 - 12:47 pm

A carjacking in Rio Linda left a victim and the suspect injured Monday morning, according to authorities.

The victim suffered non life-threatening injuries after confronting the suspect, who later suffered injuries when he crashed a stolen car, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. The suspect is being treated at a local hospital and will be booked after he is released.

The California Highway Patrol received a call about a carjacking in the 7000 block of Elder Street in Rio Linda about 7:20 a.m. Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies who were assisting the CHP received additional information that a vehicle matching the description of the stolen vehicle had crashed in the area of 9th Street and Elverta Road.

Investigators learned that the suspect, a man in his 30s, broke into a locked vehicle in the driveway of a home on Elder Street in Rio Linda, said sheriff’s Sgt. Lisa Bowman. The vehicle owner physically confronted the suspect, who ran away.

The suspect then broke out a window in a locked, parked vehicle nearby, and attempted to leave with the car when that car’s owner confronted him, Bowman said. The owner, a woman, was injured as she unsuccessfully tried to stop the car.

The suspect continued driving away, but lost control and crashed, where he was discovered by authorities, Bowman said. He suffered moderate injuries to his leg.

His name will be released when he is released from the hospital and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail, as is expected, Bowman said.
