Update: Speed may be a factor in motorist’s death on Highway 50

Published: Wednesday, Mar. 5, 2014 - 1:20 pm

A motorist was pronounced dead after his car hit a freeway pillar Wednesday during the morning commute in Sacramento.

The male motorist was traveling westbound on Highway 50 near the 26th Street offramp about 6:20 a.m. when his car left the road and struck the concrete overpass pillar, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash trapped the 45-year-old man inside his car. He was declared dead at the scene.

The CHP said that excessive speed appears to be a contributing factor leading to the crash. The 26th Street offramp remained closed until about 8:30 a.m.

The resulting arrival of emergency vehicles and CHP investigation slowed traffic during much of the morning commute. The accident is under investigation.
