Sacramento’s Republic FC made its preseason debut Wednesday, falling to Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 in a match watched by an announced crowd of just over 1,100 at Stanislaus State in Turlock.

Republic FC, Sacramento’s new USL Pro franchise, held the MLS club’s first team scoreless well into second half, then the Earthquakes got a strong push from their second team, which scored two goals in the final five minutes.

The first goal came in the 86th minute off a cross by forward Walter Martinez that was passed by Alan Gordon and ultimately fired in by midfielder JJ Koval. The second goal came a minute into stoppage time as Sam Garza’s corner kick was put in by Billy Shuler.

Republic FC had many chances to score, with its best coming in the 80th minute off a Jack Avaysen cross that Tommy Stewart headed off the crossbar.

“The feeling is really good,” Republic FC coach Predrag “Preki” Radosavljevic said. “We accounted ourselves pretty good tonight. We played really hard against an MLS team.”
