Energy policy threatens butterflies

Published: Friday, Mar. 7, 2014 - 8:03 pm

Re "Majestic monarchs and modest milkweed" (Editorials, March 2): Our national energy policy requires ethanol to be blended into traditional gasoline and has led to the cultivation of millions of acres of corn. Farmers growing the corn use herbicides to kill weeds. This ridiculous energy policy has led to water waste, destruction of wildlife habitat and has increased the price of food. It also has been a major factor in the destruction of milkweed, a crucial monarch butterfly habitat. The time is long past to change this destructive energy policy and end ethanol mandates and subsidies.
