The teenager killed by a moving train in Galt Friday night was identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s office Sunday as Kyle Guenther, 15, of Galt.

The incident happened around 8:15 p.m. Friday, when Guenther was hit by a northbound Union Pacific train at the tracks near C and Fourth streets in Galt.

The teenager, who was initially identified by Galt police as a 14-year-old, was taken to Kaiser South Sacramento for treatment, but he died from his injuries Saturday morning.

The preliminary investigation by Union Pacific indicated that Guenther was trying to race in front of the moving train when he was struck. He and three other teens were trespassing on Union Pacific property at the time.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the deceased,” said Aaron Hunt, Union Pacific spokesman Saturday. “This is a stark reminder of the inherent dangers of railroad property.”

Union Pacific continues to investigate the incident.
