Re "Evil of slavery is obvious" (Letters, March 10): That letter writer Cecelia Stephens could dismiss a thoughtful editorial with the observation that the evil of slavery is obvious underscores how important it is that we deal with this part of our history.

Preferring to continue on without acknowledging what centuries of slavery did to our nation avoids helpful opportunity.

South Africa and Germany have modeled for the world the hard work and benefits of confronting an unacceptable past.

Art is simply one of many tools that are needed to accomplish this critical task. Suppressing efforts to openly and accurately depict the difficulty that this history has posed for our nation prevents sustaining progress.
