Isaiah Thomas was benched late during the Kings’ loss at Detroit Tuesday night.

Postgame notes: Thomas accepts benching late in loss to Pistons

Isaiah Thomas watched the final 5:26 of Tuesday’s 99-89 loss to the Detroit Pistons from an unfamiliar spot: the Kings’ bench.

Thomas was replaced by Ray McCallum with the Kings trailing 87-73. Eighteen seconds earlier Thomas missed a fast-break layup, though he probably should have passed to DeMarcus Cousins.

The Kings cut Detroit’s lead to 89-81 with Thomas out but got no closer.

Thomas said coach Michael Malone did not tell him why he was benched.

“(Malone) made a decision, and that was his decision,” Thomas said. “I’m all for it, whatever happens happens. It just sucks that we still lost with the decision he made. That was probably the first time he’s done that all season, but it’s all good. He’s trying to win at the end of the day.”

Thomas finished with 19 points, eight assists and five turnovers.

• There was little opportunity to ask Malone about the decision since the media had only a short time for an interview. It’s like that sometimes after a loss.

• The Kings have lost three in a row. Their opponents on Wednesday, the Philadelphia 76ers, have lost 17 straight.

A foul mood permeated the Kings’ locker room after the loss to Detroit. I don’t want to imagine how it will be if they lose to the Sixers.
