A warm-up is expected through the weekend that could deliver temperatures near 80 degrees in Sacramento.
Building high pressure aloft over the west coast will produce blue skies and the warm temperatures Thursday as winds decrease in interior Northern California.
On Wednesday, temperatures topped out at 76 degrees in Sacramento, which is 10 degrees above average for March 12.
Daytime highs over the weekend are forecast to approach 80 degrees in the Sacramento region, mid-70s in the foothills and 60s in the Sierra Nevada. The National Weather Service is predicting a high of 79 degrees in Sacramento on Sunday.
Computer models show a colder weather system dropping south from the Gulf of Alaska next week, bringing a better chance of rain and snow, although strength and timing of the change remain uncertain, according to forecasters.
