Midtown businesses gather for spring mixer

The Midtown Business Association is hosting a spring mixer and open house Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at its new office, 919 20th St., between I and J streets. Attendees can mingle with business and property owners while sampling hors d’oeuvres and drinks from various midtown establishments. Admission is $10. Association members and a guest may attend for free.

Behind the News: Representatives of Greenwise Joint Ventures, a regional nonprofit, will be on hand to promote The Farm to Fork to Fuel Pilot Project, which seeks to recycle food waste into energy.

‘Spinning Plates’ opens capital’s food film festival

Launched in 2012 as a way to showcase food-themed documentaries, the 10-day Sacramento Food Film Festival kicks off Thursday this year with a showing of the film “Spinning Plates” at Ten22, the Old Sacramento restaurant at 1022 Second St., from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets for opening night are $40, but admission prices vary depending on the event. Behind the News: Directed by Joseph Levy, “Spinning Plates” examines the lives of the people behind the operations of three restaurants – one in Chicago, one in Iowa and a third in Tuscon, Ariz. Other films shown during the festival include “Beer Wars,” “Cafeteria Man” and “Sweet, Sexy Ocean.”
