Oakland A’s right-hander and projected Opening Day starter Jarrod Parker will undergo Tommy John surgery next week and likely miss the entire 2014 season, the team announced today.

Parker will undergo reconstructive revision surgery to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow next Tuesday in Florida, with Dr. James Andrews performing the surgery, the A’s said in a news release.

It will be the second time Parker has undergone “Tommy John” surgery. Parker also had the procedure done in October 2009, also by Andrews.

Parker was 12-8 with a 3.97 ERA in 32 starts for the A’s last season and had made three Cactus League starts this spring, recording a 10.61 ERA.

The news is part of a rough week for the A’s starting rotation. Right-hander A.J. Griffin is not scheduled to throw for several weeks due to elbow tendinitis and will likely be out to start the season. The A’s also announced that left-hander Scott Kazmir was scratched from his Cactus League start today with left triceps stiffness.

Parker’s injury leaves right-hander Sonny Gray as a top candidate to start Opening Day, heading a now-projected rotation that includes Gray, Kazmir, Dan Straily, Jesse Chavez and Tommy Milone.

Chavez pitched out of the A’s bullpen in a long relief role last season and has been very good this spring, not allowing a run in 12 2/3 Cactus League innings with two walks and 12 strikeouts. Milone was a member of the rotation for much of 2013 and is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in four Cactus League outings this spring.
