Esparto soccer coach draws 30-year sentence for child molestation

Published: Monday, Mar. 17, 2014 - 6:11 pm

An Esparto soccer coach who pleaded no contest to 12 counts of felony child sexual assault has been sentenced to 30 years in state prison.

Cristan Rooms, 32, is accused of assaulting five young boys whom he met when he was their soccer coach. He pleaded no contest in February and was sentenced Monday by Yolo County Superior Court Judge Stephen Mock, according to a District Attorney’s Office news release.

Authorities said Rooms exploited his relationship as the boys’ coach to sexually molest them between 2007 and 2011. The assaults came to light when the mother of one of the boys received a sexually descriptive text message from Rooms and contacted the Yolo County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff’s detectives investigated and discovered five boys who had been sexually assaulted by Rooms.

Detective Jennifer Davis obtained statements from the victims’ parents and confirmed the time frame in which Rooms coached, mentored and cared for the children in his home in Esparto. It matched the period of time the children reported the abuse occurred, authorities said.

Supervising Deputy District Attorney Rob Gorman, who prosecuted the case, said the plea bargain eliminated the need for a jury trial and spared the boys from having to testify about the abuse.
