Police can't prevent gun violence

Re "Donnelly in office? It's the O.K. Corral" (Viewpoints, March 18): This last weekend, there were two dead and 15 hurt in shootings in the Sacramento area.

No doubt, all those shooters were law-abiding gun owners who couldn't resist the temptation to drag iron and cap some innocent, right?

How many were illegally wielding illegal guns?

Legal gun possession is not the problem, and criminals don't care about laws. Maybe Assemblyman Tim Donnelly has a point. The police can no longer protect us. They can only offer the threat of retribution, not prevention. The days of the beat cop are long gone. They can only play catch-up.

It's up to us to relieve them of the necessity of determining what happened to us. Rather, we should be there to explain to them what happened.
