UPDATE: UC Davis police arrest man suspected of sneaking into women’s dorm room

Published: Wednesday, Mar. 19, 2014 - 5:33 pm

UC Davis police announced the arrest of a man suspected of using a stolen residence hall access card to enter a dormitory, then enter a room occupied by three women early Monday.

Justin Chiou, 18, was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of burglary.

Andy Fell, a campus spokesman, said a man was discovered in the Potter Hall dorm room, in the Tercero housing area, about 6 a.m. Monday. When discovered and confronted by the occupants, the man fled.

Police searched the area but were unable to find the suspect.

Fell said surveillance camera photos showed that the suspect had entered the residence hall about 12:30 a.m. Monday, possibly through a door that had been left ajar. During that time, police believe a residence hall access card belonging to a Potter Hall resident was stolen. The suspect allegedly used the stolen card to re-enter the hall a few hours later. He then entered the dorm room where he was discovered.

Fell declined to discuss details of what occurred in the dorm room, saying that was part of the ongoing police investigation. Police in a news release described the incident as aggravated trespass.

Fell said police continue to investigate the case. Anyone with information is asked to call the UC Davis Police Department at (530) 752-1230.
