Sacramento sheriff’s deputies arrest man after brief pursuit in Natomas

Published: Wednesday, Mar. 19, 2014 - 4:59 pm

Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man this afternoon after he allegedly led them on a short pursuit and then fled on foot.

The 33-year-old man, who has not been identified, was taken to a local hospital because he crashed the car he was driving at the end of the pursuit, said sheriff’s Sgt. Lisa Bowman. His name will be released after he is booked into jail.

The pursuit began shortly after 1 p.m. in the 2000 block of Sherington Way in Natomas after a stolen car detective ran the license plates on a car and saw that the car’s make and model did not match that of the car registered with those plates, Bowman said. He tried to pull the car over, and the driver stopped long enough to let a female passenger out before he sped away, Bowman said.

The woman is not suspected of any crimes, she said.

The pursuit continued for several minutes and reached speeds of up to 70 miles per hour, Bowman said. During the course of the pursuit, the driver hit at least two parked cars.

The driver ultimately crashed the car into a residential fence in the area of Sherington Way and New Hampshire Way, Bowman said. The man fled on foot but was taken into custody soon thereafter.

Bowman said the man is likely to face charges of car theft or possession of stolen property.
