Re "Putin claims his prize: Crimea" (Page A1, March 19): Can we not learn from the past? Is our ignorance of history so blatant that we do not understand the problems of our times?
We will continue to repeat our mistakes. The Crimea is not nor ever has been a part of the Ukraine. Actually, Genghis Khan's descendant reigned at Solkhat from the beginning of the 15th century. The princes of the Ottoman Empire ruled until 1777. They became dependent upon Russia and were annexed to the Russian Empire in 1783.
After the Crimean War of 1854 to 1856, Crimean Tatars emigrated to the Crimea. I am embarrassed when our political leaders and media are so ill-informed.
