Sacramento sheriff’s detectives arrest fifth suspect in Wyda Way stabbings

Detectives have arrested a fifth suspect in the triple stabbing on Wyda Way that left one man dead and two other victims injured.

Jose Guadalupe Salazar is the latest suspect to be arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the gang-motivated attack, said Sacramento County sheriff’s Sgt. Lisa Bowman.

Salazar, 21, is a known gang member from Sacramento County, Bowman said. He was arrested Thursday on an unrelated warrant, and detectives added the murder charge Friday, Bowman said.

Detectives believe the Wyda Way attack stemmed from a misperception by the suspects that one of the victims, a 15-year-old male, was a rival gang member. When the teen tried to ignore the suspects, who were making gang signs with their hands and using gang language, the suspects followed the boy and his friends back to a home on Wyda Way. During a fight, the suspects stabbed the 15-year-old, a 29-year-old neighbor who stopped to help and the 41-year-old father of one of the teen’s friends, who went outside the home to intervene. The father, Shannon Gregg, died at a local hospital.

None of the victims was affiliated with gangs, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Last weekend, detectives arrested Sebastian Torres, 21, and three teenagers: Jonathan Canil, 16, Victor Hernandez, 15, and Javier Lopez, 15. The Sacramento Bee is identifying the juvenile suspects because the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office has charged them as adults. All four were arraigned Tuesday on charges of murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
