Two men were killed early Sunday morning when their vehicles went off the roadway at two separate locations north of Sacramento and ran into trees, with one also going into the side of a house.

The first accident occurred around 4:45 am. when a Honda Accord was going at a high rate of speed on westbound I-80, near the West El Camino Avenue on ramp.

“He just went off the road, hit a ditch, which sent it airborne over the on-ramp and into a tree,” said CHP officer Trevor Risby, who responded to the crash. He said the force of the crash sheared the vehicle “between the back half and the front half.”

The 30-year-old driver, who was not identified Sunday, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, but was not ejected. He was the sole occupant of the car. It was not known Sunday what caused the vehicle to go off the roadway.

Another CHP officer Todd Yager told KCRA 3 News that the car was probably going in excess of 100 mph when it went off the ramp, based on the amount of damage and the path of travel. Investigators also learned that the driver had a suspended license, and apparently found marijuana in the vehicle, according to KCRA.

The second accident occurred around 6:35 a.m. when a man driving a 2013 Dodge Ram pickup truck on Phoenix Avenue and failed to stop at the T-intersection of Illinois Avenue, the CHP reported.

The truck crossed Illinois Avenue and collided into caution sign and a tree. The pickup spun counter-clockwise and then crashed into a house on the east side of Illinois Avenue.

The driver, a 35-year-old man, wore a seatbelt and was pinned to his seat. Rescuers extricated him from the truck. He was taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

Speed was a factor, authorities said.

Both incidents are still under investigation.
