Teen killed by train is identified by Yuba coroner

The name of the teen killed when struck by a train while walking to a school dance with his girlfriend in Marysville has been released by the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department.

The coroner’s office of the sheriff’s department identified the teen as Mateus Gabriel Moore, 16, of Marysville.

The accident Friday evening occurred near Marysville’s high school and a little league park where a game was being played.

Moore died at the scene, and his girlfriend, Mickayla Friend, 16, who was also struck by the train, was airlifted to the hospital. She was last reported in critical condition.

The conductor sounded the horn and tried to stop, but it typically takes more than a mile to come to a halt, Union Pacific Railroad said in statement.

Investigators told KCRA-TV that the teens were walking south on the tracks -- the same direction as the Union Pacific train. They were scheduled to attend a Sadie Hawkins Day dance.

An earlier online story had a different first and middle name for Moore due to incorrect information from the sheriff’s department.

On Sunday, hundreds gathered to remember Moore, a 16-year-old musician. Read more about the vigil.
