The first precipitation in more than two weeks is expected in Sacramento and could appear as early as Tuesday afternoon.

While not a gully washer, the weather system could drop about a half-inch of rain on Sacramento by Friday.

Forecasters say periods of rain are expected in the Sacramento region through Monday. Not only will lower elevations get wet, but the Sierra Nevada also could see significant snow for early spring.

The initial weather system was nearing the coast at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. National Weather Service forecasters said radar showed the frontal band of the system just off northwest California.

The system is expected to move eastward Tuesday, with rainfall beginning in Redding in the morning. The Sacramento region could experience rain by the afternoon and snow could fall in the Sierra in the evening.

The first storm will produce modest results at lower elevations, according to forecasters. However, it also may pack some thunderstorms for the valley on Tuesday so there may be some strong downpours under dark clouds.

Another wave of wet weather is forecast to arrive Wednesday and continue into Thursday. So far this month, only 0.80 of an inch of rain has fallen in Sacramento.

Precipitation forecast through Friday in Northern California:

Sacramento: 0.55 inches

Woodland: 0.42

Roseville: 0.70

Lodi: 0.49

Jackson: 0.95

Auburn: 1.18

Placerville: 1.19
