Sylvan Learning looks to expand in Northern California

Baltimore-based Sylvan Learning says it plans to add nearly a dozen franchised learning centers throughout Northern California over the next several years.

Sylvan, which currently operates seven centers in the Sacramento area, said it is targeting expansion in the counties of Sacramento, Placer, Yolo, Amador, Solano, Sutter and Tuolumne. The company says it is seeking entrepreneurs for franchise opportunities to own the centers, which provide supplemental instruction outside traditional K-12 schools.

Sylvan said it aims to set up in “undeveloped” Northern California areas that currently do not have a Sylvan center.

“With school budget cuts resulting in larger class sizes and fewer resources, and with increased competition to get into colleges of choice, more families are seeking the personal learning experience that can only be found at Sylvan,” said Scott Hurlock, Sylvan’s vice president of franchise development.
