Re "It just doesn't make sense" (Page A1, March 30): I object strenuously to the denigration of the police officers who were placed in the untenable position of having to shoot and kill Parminder Singh Shergill. This man placed himself, officers and the public in danger by design.
As for why officers would shoot him 14 times, it's their duty to put a rapid halt to the danger. Their valor is no myth. They place themselves in harm's way every day to serve and protect the public.
The officers and their families will live with this the rest of their lives.
This is a tragic case involving a mentally and emotionally disturbed individual creating a situation that left law enforcement officers no choice. Their actions were 100 percent correct.
We need more available help for the mentally and emotionally ill members of society who pose a threat to themselves and others.
