Man on stolen dirt bike arrested after Auburn-area pursuit

Published: Tuesday, Mar. 25, 2014 - 6:08 pm

A homeless man was booked into the Placer County Jail after he was spotted riding a stolen dirt bike and led sheriff’s deputies on a chase in the Auburn area.

The incident began about 11:45 a.m. Monday when a deputy on foot saw Daniel Joseph Hubanks, 33, riding a dirt bike, without a helmet, near Chana High School and Richardson Drive. The deputy yelled at him to stop. Hubanks failed to yield, and additional deputies came to the area to search for him, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

Two sheriff’s lieutenants and a captain happened to be in the area in an unmarked car and, joining the search, they spotted Hubanks riding through a resident’s yard. Hubanks got back on the roadway and, as the officers in the unmarked car turned on their lights and siren, the dirt bike ran out of gas.

Hubanks dropped the dirt bike and ran, with the two lieutenants running after him. Hubanks jumped in a drainage canal, then surrendered at gunpoint with the two lieutenants right behind him, sheriff’s officials said.

He was booked into Placer County Jail on suspicion of stealing a vehicle; possession of a large, concealed fixed-blade knife; possession of stolen property; and resisting arrest. His bail was set at $130,000.

Sheriff’s officials said the dirt bike, a 2005 Honda 450x, was returned to is owner.
