David Del Grande continued his hot hitting with a three-run homer as host Sacramento State beat Air Force 7-1 Tuesday, the Hornets reported.
Del Grande, who Monday was named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week, went deep in the fifth inning.
Sac State (13-11) won its fifth consecutive game. Air Force (4-19) committed six errors, leading to three unearned runs.
Redshirt freshman Justin Dillon (El Dorado High School) started for the Hornets and had his longest college appearance, pitching three innings and allowing one run. Five Sac State pitchers teamed on a four-hitter.
• Steven Patterson’s bases-loaded, run-scoring single in the 10th inning gave host UC Davis a 4-3 win over Nevada, the Aggies reported.
The Aggies (12-9) scored all their runs over the last four innings and won their fourth in a row. The Wolf Pack (12-12) was coming off a three-game sweep of Air Force.
Hornets’ Taylor loses
in sudden-death playoff
• Sac State golfer Owen Taylor finished second in the Texas-San Antonio Lone Star Invitational, losing on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff with Gavin Green of team champion New Mexico, the Hornets reported.
Taylor closed with a par 72, and Green had a 66 to tie at 6-under-par 210. Both parred the first playoff hole before Green, ranked No. 12 in Division I, made a par and Taylor’s putt lipped out.
Sac State finished 11th.
• UC Davis’ Betty Chen was in second place after two rounds of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic in Lahaina, Hawaii, the school reported.
Chen shot a par 72 for a 2-under 142 total, six shots behind Pepperdine’s Grace Na.
The Aggies were in third place entering today’s final round.
