A 40-year-old Elk Grove man died Wednesday evening when the car he was driving was struck by a train on Calvine Road near Vintage Park Drive in south Sacramento County.

The collision occurred about 6:10 p.m. California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Michael Bradley said the man was westbound on Calvine Road, west of Vintage Park Drive, in a Toyota Corolla. When he approached the railroad crossing, the crossing arms were down, signal lights were flashing the warning bells sounding. Bradley said witnesses reported that the Corolla either went around or skidded through the crossing arms.

The front end of the vehicle was struck by a southbound Union Pacific train. Bradley said the impact propelled the car into the crossing arms and into the median of Calvine Road, where it struck a pole.

The driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was declared dead at the scene. His name has not been released pending notification of family.

No one aboard the train was injured.
